Anchorage Hotels
For many people, the greater Anchorage area is where you
can get it all: a city with a small, albeit enthusiastic, nightlife, good
restaurants, and culture-plus access to the half-million-acre Chugach
State Park, an area packed with trails, streams, glaciers, bears, and
moose. To the north, the wilderness playgrounds of the Susitna and Matanuska
Valleys give way to views of the Chugach and Alaska Ranges. If the weather
cooperates, Mount McKinley, which locals simply call Denali or "The
Mountain," juts above the horizon. And in the right season, salmon run so
thick you have to watch your step crossing a city stream.
People who live in Anchorage often say the best thing about it
is that it's 20 minutes from the real Alaska. Built on the fortunes of the
railroad, war, and oil, it began in 1915 as a tent city on the banks of Ship
Creek. Today, half the state's population lives in this metropolis. A center for
politics and the arts, it's also a gateway for adventures into Alaska's
outback—most notably Denali National Park and Preserve, the spectacular
wilderness located north of Anchorage that's a must-see for every visitor to the
Last Great State. The most popular excursion from the city takes you to
Portage Glacier, a stunning and accessible glacier and ice berg-filled lake
on the Kenai Peninsula
For an introduction to the city and state, visit the
Anchorage Museum of History and Art, and don't miss the spectacular
Alaska Native Heritage Center for an exciting immersion in the state's
diverse Native cultures. If fishing is your thing, you don't have to go far to
drop a line: Anglers can pull 40-pound king salmon out of Ship Creek, a river of
wildlife right in the shadow of downtown's glass-skinned office buildings!
You'll also find the number of fine restaurants in the city is steadily
growing, with highly trained chefs preparing the world's best seafood with
aplomb. Even better, the entertainment doesn't stop when the snow falls: There's
world-famous downhill skiing at Mount Alyeska in Girdwood. Or, during the
right season (early March), you can see the start of the famous Iditarod Sled
Dog Race, cross-country ski to lunch, then go to a Broadway musical in the
evening
But don't forget, this is the Last Frontier. Seasons are alternately fleeting
and harsh. Summer is short and intense. In September, the leaves are turning a
vibrant gold and by October, frost has arrived and snow (euphemistically called
"termination dust") is settling into the mountains. Winter hits Anchorage hard
and stays well into April. Temperatures can drop to below zero for a week or two
at a time, though usually they stay in the teens and 20s. By mid-May, the land
comes alive again. The 6 hours of winter sunlight are nearly tripled. Summer is
just a few weeks away, with mild temperatures that rarely get above 70°F, and
rain is common. But on days when the sun shines until midnight and the Chugach
Mountains scream with color, this place is spectacular
