graphicDelaware is a little short on land, but it's long on water -- much of it borders the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, its southern beaches and beach towns are a big draw. All have sand and sea, but they are remarkably different, ranging from tranquil stretches of protected shoreline to low-key resort towns to busy vacation centers such as Rehoboth Beach.

There are some interesting things to do away from the water, as well. Northern Delaware has a strong list of cultural attractions, including the remarkable Winterthur Museum in the Brandywine Valley, one of several attractions initially owned by the du Pont family.

Given its compact size and many things to see, Delaware can provide travelers with a lot of activities in just a few days' time. Those with a week or more will find the Delaware shore a relaxing place to linger -- or they might consider seeing the state as part of a larger tour that includes Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey.

Cultural attractions — From Winterthur's collection of 85,000 pieces of early American decorative arts to the 14 galleries of Dover's Biggs Museum of American Art, Delaware offers an impressive array of paintings, illustrations, furniture, pottery, stained glass and more. For a complete schedule of ongoing and traveling exhibitions, search for your destination.

Historical attractions — Delaware's history spans from pre-Colonial days to the present. Enjoy museums and monuments that honor all aspects of our rich heritage, from the Nanticoke and Lenni-Lenape Indians to agriculture, science and industry through the years. Visit Fort Delaware, which held prisoners of war from Stonewall Jackson's Confederate Army. Explore Old New Castle, the first capital of Delaware, and Dover, the capital today. Whatever era interests you, we invite you to search for your attraction.

Outdoor activities — Forests, rivers, parks and campgrounds provide the ideal setting for some of the state's best outdoor adventures. Canoeing. Fishing. Golfing. Biking. Hiking. Bird-watching. Horse-riding. Hunting. Boating. There's something for everyone throughout the year, from the 90-mile coastline to the hundreds of miles of nature trails inland. Search for your activity.

Shopping — Looking for a bargain? Head to the Rehoboth Outlets for 140 brand-name factory-direct stores. Love catalogs? Stop by the Shipyard Shops in Wilmington and try it on first at the brand-name outlet stores. Have an eye for antiques? Southern Delaware's Antiques Road has more than 20 roadside shops over a 20-mile stretch. Plus, museum shops for a unique shopping experience or the multitude of shopping malls throughout the state. All tax-free, all the time. Search for your form of indulgence.

Gaming — Three Delaware gaming entertainment venues invite you to try your luck at the slots or the races. Dover Downs Entertainment features slots, NASCAR racing and live harness racing. Midway Slots and Simulcast has expanded slot machines and a harness racing loop. And Delaware Park Racetrack and Slots Casino features live thoroughbred racing. Search for your fun.

Festivals and Events — Delawareans love to celebrate. Annual festivities include the Delmarva Chicken Festival in Sussex County, the Great Delaware Kite Festival at Cape Henlopen State Park, the Nanticoke Riverfest in Seaford, the Jazz Festival on Wilmington's Riverfront, and many more. For a complete schedule, check out the Events calendar.

Entertainment — Plays, traveling Broadway productions, dinner theatres, ballet and other performing arts are crowd-pleasers throughout the First State. Popular entertainment venues include Wilmington's Grand Opera House, Three Little Bakers, the Playhouse Theatre, Dover's Patchwork Playhouse, the Schwartz Center for the Arts, and a variety of professional and nonprofessional theatres. Search Cultural attractions for your entertainment venue.
